Prior to the 2006 general elections, Katema was defeated by Barbara Bwalya-Chibulu in the MMD candidate selection vote for the Bwana Mkubwa seat
Bwalya-Chibulu went on to lose to Joseph Zulu of the Patriotic Front in the elections
