10 Things You Didn’t Know About Evelyn Dennison Hone

  1. Sir Evelyn Dennison Hone was the last Governor of Northern Rhodesia.
  2. He was governor from 1959 until Zambia’s independence in 1964.
  3. Hone was born on 13 December 1911.
  4. Evelyn was born into the Hone family in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia.
  5. He was the son of Arthur Rickman Hone, the Chief Magistrate in Southern Rhodesia, and Olive Gertrude Fairbridge Scanlen, the daughter of Sir Thomas Scanlen.
  6. He was the nephew of Rt. Rev. Campbell Hone and the great-grandson of Ven. Richard Hone.
  7. After studying at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, Hone entered the Colonial Service and served in Tanganyika Territory.\
  8. Chief secretary to the Governor of Northern Rhodesia from 1957 to 1959, he himself became governor in 1959.
  9. The Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka was later named after him.
  10. He died in September 1979.
